After a decade of co-authoring and recipe developing for some of the most successful and meaningful cookbooks on the market, Julia decided to write her very first solo cookbook. That book, Small Victories, is the sort of book you can only write once: a book that combines all 31 of her years of life experience and passion for cooking at home into one giant love letter to all that she believes in. Small Victories celebrates the way so many of us cook: one step (or “small victory”) at a time. Each recipe of her book (which contains over 100 recipes and hundreds more spin-offs) starts with a tip, trick or technique that you can use to create something delicious, and then offers how to alter or expand on that dish to make something new and different. There are recipes for everything from delicious chocolate cake with raspberry jam and morning muffins to Julia’s beloved Caesar dressing and a Korean clambake.
Through it all I’m working on my own wellness — making stress management and sleep a priority, tweaking what I eat, staying flexible when it comes to necessary change, making sure to move every day, and surrounding myself with inspiring people. Also being realistic and nice to myself if I slip up — I want to be this kind of person for myself and others.
Fortunately, I had a co-author, so I didn’t have to worry about recipe headnotes (which I understand can be very challenging to write well) or features (research, research, and more research), both of which give voice to a cookbook and help inform and connect the reader to the recipes. I also didn’t have to handle the manuscript edits! I could focus on what I enjoy most — food and photos!

This is a well–rounded fruit—seafood–vegetable dominant tome, plus in this way perhaps could be discern as a complement to Martin’s book, one you’d utilize during the week for lighter fare. It is exactly because the title says—relaxed cooking. The recipes are extremely simple to create, with no exceptional techniques or ingredients needed = Watermelon with mint with lime, pan–fried calamari with roasted asparagus salad, crispy vegetable fritters, plus Greek doughnuts are only a few of the recipes which exemplify Stone’s relaxed cooking.
