It’s only May, but lately I’ve been gravitating toward oceany colors in anticipation of the warm summer months when all I want to do is dive into water: pools, lakes, oceans, showers — anything cool and refreshing. I’ve never gone so far as to bedeck a whole room in blue hues, but I’m loving this dining room palette so much that I might have to consider going blue this summer. The painted walls make the darkness in the “after” room feel elegant and dramatic, not drab, as in the “before” image. I also love the jolt of energy provided by the bright aqua chairs and lime green doors. Chelsey made many wise decisions in this room besides the color palette: The built-in provides tons of beautiful storage, the chevron window seat is a great addition of pattern and the decorative molding provides added interest and sophistication to the walls. Nicely done, Chelsey!
So many of my childhood memories revolve around my parents’ dining room. It’s played host to all four of us kids’ high school and college graduation dinners, 15 years worth of Christmas breakfasts, and every birthday of mine since I was 13. Painted in a rich cranberry color, the room has become a symbol for laughter and bonding, and a place where both sides of my family have cried tears of joy and sadness. That being said, I’m never surprised when other homeowners gush over how important their dining room has been to them, too. Over time, their spaces have gathered more and more memories, each one becoming permanently etched in the grain of a wooden table or the cushion of a chair.
The lesson I’ve learned from this Before & After is that if formal dining isn’t your thing, you can turn your dining room into an awesome home library — that’s a valuable lesson in my book. Jennifer enlisted the help of her friend, interior designer Autumn Clemons, to revamp this beige box and turn it into a dark, dramatic and ultra-modern space. Splurging on key pieces like the curtains and the sculptural light fixture was a wise decision; they really stand out and pull the entire look together. I’m sure this room will see far more use than it did prior to the redesign. Great job, Jennifer and Autumn!
