Basic Steps: In the dining room, we tore out a faux stone wall and replaced it with sheetrock, primed and painted the walls (Behr Ultra Pure White), sanded and refinished the floors, switched out the overhead light, and replaced all of the electrical outlets. We still have to paint the radiators and finish the cushion for the window seat. Tape your to-do list to the front door, line up good babysitters, always have cold beer on hand, and don’t listen to the naysayers who stop by to comment on your project and drink all of your cold beer.
this before & after comes from interior designer matthew lanphier in los angeles. he worked on this budget dining room makeover in chicago, focusing on keeping things as affordable as possible. matthew removed the wallpaper, repainted the walls, reupholstered chairs in sunbrella fabric (to prevent fading from the sunny windows), and then redid the chairs by sanding and spray painting them (professional refinishing wasn’t in the budget). matthew calls the new look “tailored, yet whimsical” and i love the way everything feels clean, fresh and modern. great work, matthew!
We’ve all been there. Faced with a room that desperately needs an update, but a wallet that desperately needs a fill-up. Redesigning a room doesn’t come cheap, especially when factoring in all-new furniture and fixtures. Oftentimes, one might find themselves ogling over home goods in shop catalogues, but opting to wait a little longer on the renovation because of their ultimate price tag. When Felicia Brickey of Little Brick Home encountered this issue with her kitchen, however, she was undeterred. Instead of handing over an arm and a leg for big-bucks designer furnishings, she opted to get the same look through the DIY route, furnishing the room with a mixture of self-made creations and budget finds. The results, achieved for a little shy of $400, are even better than the pricy alternative. The space went from drab and ordinary to elegant and charming.
