“While the renovation added many new features and opened up several spaces to create a better flow, the design was simultaneously careful not to overwhelm or compromise the spirit of the historic features,” Sarah says.

It’s only May, but lately I’ve been gravitating toward oceany colors in anticipation of the warm summer months when all I want to do is dive into water: pools, lakes, oceans, showers — anything cool and refreshing. I’ve never gone so far as to bedeck a whole room in blue hues, but I’m loving this dining room palette so much that I might have to consider going blue this summer. The painted walls make the darkness in the “after” room feel elegant and dramatic, not drab, as in the “before” image. I also love the jolt of energy provided by the bright aqua chairs and lime green doors. Chelsey made many wise decisions in this room besides the color palette: The built-in provides tons of beautiful storage, the chevron window seat is a great addition of pattern and the decorative molding provides added interest and sophistication to the walls. Nicely done, Chelsey!

This is undoubtedly the most popular category among our readers when it comes to TV units. Space is not a luxury that many of us can afford to spare and we tend to swap the expansive for the ergonomic. In the small living space, a dashing TV unit coupled with open shelving can make a big difference. This is especially true if your old TV stand is simply messy, ungainly and takes up too much square footage. Replace it with any of the dashing TV Units showcased below and you will definitely see an instant transformation in the living room ambiance.

“Always interested in the arts, we had early careers in the restaurant and plumbing businesses,” Vivian shares. “We married and settled in Oxford, MS in 1999 where we began our art careers and business in earnest. We are developing a sort of arts compound where we live, work and promote regional artists. We have taken our time reclaiming the acreage we acquired and look forward to the coming additions/evolution, including a sculpture garden in the field outside our home.” The arts compound she’s referring to is the rural art gallery she and Walter opened three years ago, sitting off the ground in a treehouse-like setting, aptly named The Oxford Treehouse Gallery, just 200 yards from their home. The gallery, as well as their home, houses a lot of their own art, too. Walter is an artist/blacksmith and Vivian is a painter and block printer.

Hearts come in many shapes and sizes this time of year, but I’ve always preferred the slightly uneven, handmade versions that someone took the time to cut out and make by hand. These three DIYs are exactly that. Whether they’re filled with love notes, candy or just come as they are, these handmade tokens of love are little reminders that someone in your life is special. I hope you have a little extra time this week (or weekend) to play around with some materials you may already have on hand and see what you come up with!

Cost: $5000 (for all custom woodwork throughout the house, including the bookshelf) and $300 (paint, wood, fabric, and floor work in dining room) Basic Steps: The dining room involved patching, caulking, and painting the ceiling and walls. Then we installed the picture rail, added molding and wood to the lower portion of the walls, and caulked and painted them. The paint on the ceiling is Behr Skyline Steel; Behr Silver Hill for the walls. All furniture was thrifted except for kid chairs, which are from Ikea.

It can be hard to find bedding that’s vibrant and organic, as many companies stick to neutrals when it comes to eco-friendly options. That’s why we’re totally smitten with Anna Sova Home, which offers vividly colorful options, as well as crisp and neutral possibilities. Anna Sova linens are milled in Switzerland with 100% US organic Pima cotton, and they’re finished in Italy with eco-safe cotton bleaching, dyeing and finishing processes. There are no toxic or petrochemical pesticides, dioxin bleaches and optical whiteners. The list of eco-friendly features goes on! And if you love a high thread count, you’ll really love how quality meets organic style with unforgettable brilliance:

I was inspired by the architecture of the home as well as the amazing weather in Southern California. Cliff May homes are known for their relationship to the outdoors, so I wanted to showcase the connection between the interior and exterior, hence the sunny chartreuse walls and landscape green sofa. The original flooring was concrete and my clients wanted something new that was unique but durable (they have a dog, two cats and a baby on the way). We ended up with a porcelain tile that looks like wood flooring, super durable and wallet friendly. We wallpapered two walls with a colorful, graphic pattern that is very impactful upon entry. It was the perfect backdrop for a custom designed sectional sofa to serve as banquette seating for the organic, modern dining table. The vintage side chairs and light fixture belonged to the client and fit in perfectly with the new furnishings. This space showcases the couples’s casual but stylish lifestyle and I just love how this space came together!
