Basic Steps: First we painted the walls, cut the wood for the window bar and painted them. I previously made a chandelier out of an old pulley I wanted to hang above the table. We just placed the already existing furniture, used an ikea desk as a dining table, because it was much more narrow than our old table, hang the mirror and decorated with fleamarket finds (candle holder and folding chairs) I once purchased.

this before & after comes from interior designer matthew lanphier in los angeles. he worked on this budget dining room makeover in chicago, focusing on keeping things as affordable as possible. matthew removed the wallpaper, repainted the walls, reupholstered chairs in sunbrella fabric (to prevent fading from the sunny windows), and then redid the chairs by sanding and spray painting them (professional refinishing wasn’t in the budget). matthew calls the new look “tailored, yet whimsical” and i love the way everything feels clean, fresh and modern. great work, matthew!

When Samantha and Jonah Arcade and their two daughters outgrew their previous Brooklyn, NY apartment of six years, they never imagined they’d find room to breathe in a brownstone that was just 12 feet wide on each floor. But with Tirzah, 8, and Delaney, 4, a 1,000-square-foot home “wasn’t cutting it,” Sam admits. So about nine months ago, the family of four took a chance on a 1901 landmarked brownstone in need of a full renovation — from top to bottom, all four floors.

This dining room used to be a part of the garage that [the Samartans] had converted to add more livable square footage to their home and I was brought onto the project to bring life into the space. First thing was first, deciding on what this room would be. We tinkered with the idea of a sitting room, but since they already had a living room in the home, Stacia and Phil wanted a space that would be more useful, so we decided that a formal dining room would be the best decision

This is undoubtedly the most popular way to combine gray and yellow inside the modern bathroom. A gray bathroom gives you plenty of design flexibility, and by keeping the backdrop neutral, you can alter the appeal of the space by simply changing the accent additions. This allows you to switch between the hottest colors of the season with ease, and you can do so with minimal fuss and in a cost-effective fashion. Beating the boredom of winter, complementing the breezy allure of summer and fitting in with the effervescence of spring and fall, yellow accents in the gray bathroom simply never fail!

1. Measure the height and width of your notebook. Since you’ll be covering the inside and outside of the front and back covers, you’ll need to do some quick math in order to cut your fabric. Multiply the height of your notebook x 2. Multiply the width of your notebook x 2. Then add 3″ to both numbers. For example, my notebook was 8.5″ x 11″, so my fabric measurements were 17″ + 3″ (20″ total height) by 22″ + 3″ (25″ total width).

Sarah and her husband Matthew Latkiewicz, a television host, writer, and producer, arrived in Oakland with only what they could squeeze into their Honda Fit. This included Sarah’s grandparents’ coffee table, Matthew’s two favorite chairs, some art, and their clothes. After weeks scouring Craigslist and thrift stores, Sarah realized the best place for reasonably priced home goods was estates sales. “That is how the best stuff gets into the bloodstream of the Bay Area. That and the Alameda Flea Market.” From her estate sale and flea market explorations she began assembling a collection of what she calls “soulful objects.” It took about three years before Sarah felt like she had made a cohesive and comfortable space of their 1920s Art Deco apartment.

this bold staircase makeover comes from dominique plourde of made in quebec. she recently had the urge to paint the walls of a staircase leading to her basement so she decided to take a risk! after taping up a square pattern in the hall, dominique painted the hallway a vivid mix of pinks and reds- and now she has a cheerful pattern to welcome her every time she visits the basement. great work, dominique!
