I was inspired by the architecture of the home as well as the amazing weather in Southern California. Cliff May homes are known for their relationship to the outdoors, so I wanted to showcase the connection between the interior and exterior, hence the sunny chartreuse walls and landscape green sofa. The original flooring was concrete and my clients wanted something new that was unique but durable (they have a dog, two cats and a baby on the way). We ended up with a porcelain tile that looks like wood flooring, super durable and wallet friendly. We wallpapered two walls with a colorful, graphic pattern that is very impactful upon entry. It was the perfect backdrop for a custom designed sectional sofa to serve as banquette seating for the organic, modern dining table. The vintage side chairs and light fixture belonged to the client and fit in perfectly with the new furnishings. This space showcases the couples’s casual but stylish lifestyle and I just love how this space came together!

While it’s certainly true that dark, dramatic rooms can be breathtaking, I must admit that more often than not, I support anyone’s decision to lighten up a room. I accept that this feeling is probably biased by the cave-like apartment in which I currently live, but it seems right to say it, nonetheless. Blair’s dining room is a perfect example of a lovely lightening. Taking inspiration from Scandinavian design, Blair decided to break up the all-black furniture with a fresh coat of white paint on the walls to give the room a more peaceful and cheery ambiance. I love that she left a few dark elements in the room and that she brought in some bright bits of color and pattern. The new room looks artful, modern and beautifully bright. Great work, Blair!

Cost: $5000 (for all custom woodwork throughout the house, including the bookshelf) and $300 (paint, wood, fabric, and floor work in dining room) Basic Steps: The dining room involved patching, caulking, and painting the ceiling and walls. Then we installed the picture rail, added molding and wood to the lower portion of the walls, and caulked and painted them. The paint on the ceiling is Behr Skyline Steel; Behr Silver Hill for the walls. All furniture was thrifted except for kid chairs, which are from Ikea. If I can do it, you can too! My advice is to not let yourself get overwhelmed by the enormity of the task. Just do a little bit whenever you get a chance, and eventually you’ll get ‘er done!

Above: Felicia assembled her dining room’s table and bench using DIY instructions from Anna White (Table, Bench). They’re stained using Varathane’s American Walnut. The hanging light fixture is Pottery Barn’s Rustic Glass Pendant. The walls are painted in Behr’s Porpoise.

Frantic mornings are supposed to be a rare event; at least that is how we would like it to be. But each morning seems like another battle against time and while we win some, we tend to lose a lot as well! In our attempt to eek out those few extra minutes of sleep, our entire morning becomes a mess. Of course, we are not here to motivate you or ask you to start strictly following a schedule starting tomorrow. Instead, balance your early morning lethargy with a more organized wardrobe that saves precious minutes and ensures that you reach work on time!

piquis reader kati driscoll purchased a victorian home from the 1870s that was in pretty rough shape. her dining room has heavy black soon along the walls and carpeting, holes in the wall and all sorts of pet damage. so she went to town on the space and decided to make things over! my favorite project of hers is the dining room- she ripped up the aging carpets, found beautiful heart pine flooring underneath, and sanded and stained the floors along with help from her dad and brother (her mom did the polyurethane coating!). after the floors were done, kati added wallpaper from ferm living and and a new coat of paint. as it that wasn’t enough, she also decided to open up the fireplace to expose the brick! great work, kati! click here for more pictures

Heirlooms often represent a beloved person or memory that tells us a little bit more about who we are. They don’t have to be on trend or in good condition to add warmth and personality to our homes. Not every heirloom has a fantastic history, but they all create a sense of family and belonging that serves as a reminder of the journeys that have brought us together. Here are 10 family heirlooms from the archives that celebrate history and family.

The lesson I’ve learned from this Before & After is that if formal dining isn’t your thing, you can turn your dining room into an awesome home library — that’s a valuable lesson in my book. Jennifer enlisted the help of her friend, interior designer Autumn Clemons, to revamp this beige box and turn it into a dark, dramatic and ultra-modern space. Splurging on key pieces like the curtains and the sculptural light fixture was a wise decision; they really stand out and pull the entire look together. I’m sure this room will see far more use than it did prior to the redesign. Great job, Jennifer and Autumn!

Kristen’s Storied Home in Kansas City is full of furniture and jewelry passed down from family members, but she is particularly sentimental about this buffet made by her grandfather and great-grandfather in 1963 (and considers it one of her most precious possessions). She uses the made-up word anemoia from John Koenig’s Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, meaning “a pang of nostalgia for times you’ve never experienced,” to describe her love affair with objects that tell stories of the past.
