Nowhere is this spirit of artistic community more present than in the home of Morgan Hungerford West and Mitchell West, two artists who have done admirable amounts of work to pave the way for other DC creatives to do their thing. Morgan, a content creator and consultant for several local brands and blogger behind Panda Head, is the founder and director of A Creative DC, an Instagram hashtag turned real life event and workshop. By day, Mitchell analyzes political media campaigns for Kantar Media/CMAG; by night, he fulfills all of your (and my) secret rock star dreams as the bassist for DC-based punk bank Loud Boyz.

This dining room makeover from Sarah is definitely high drama. She took a once-dreary window with sad blinds and transformed it into a wall of gorgeous textile heaven. I love her mixture of prints, the dark walls, the oversized mirror and the elegant, minimal chairs. It’s all working for me. She even painted her own Cy Twombly-inspired artwork, which turned out quite well! Sarah made some shrewd decorating decisions and I’m blown away by the impressive transformation. Great work, Sarah!

Halloween really is my favorite holiday. I love everything about it — watching scary movies, eating candy, dreaming up ridiculous costumes, dressing up, decorating with skeletons and spiderwebs, and of course, everything pumpkin. To get the party started (or just veg out with a big bowl of popcorn) here’s an easy, last minute project to help haunt your house — spooky spiderweb bowls.

Spring is the perfect time to freshen up your bedding! Whether you purchase a new duvet cover or simply top off your bed with a colorful throw pillow, an eye-catching pattern can bring your sleeping space to life. This season, a lot of the patterns are large, bold and playful. In other words, it’s easy to make a big statement, thanks to the wide variety of geometric and abstract spring bedding options available. Here are some of our very favorites…

Last month I decided to live out my dining room fantasy by rounding up 25 of my favorite dining rooms with round tables, and today I’m finishing with the rest! These 30 dining rooms show how beautiful (and dramatic) square and rectangular tables can be, and all of the different ways you can decorate and light them. If you’re looking for dining room ideas, this post will definitely keep you busy for a while. I hope you enjoy it! xo, grace

this before & after comes from interior designer matthew lanphier in los angeles. he worked on this budget dining room makeover in chicago, focusing on keeping things as affordable as possible. matthew removed the wallpaper, repainted the walls, reupholstered chairs in sunbrella fabric (to prevent fading from the sunny windows), and then redid the chairs by sanding and spray painting them (professional refinishing wasn’t in the budget). matthew calls the new look “tailored, yet whimsical” and i love the way everything feels clean, fresh and modern. great work, matthew!

I don’t have a dining room, but if I did, I would want it to have some drama. After all, if I’m going to devote a whole room to an activity I usually do sitting in front of the television, it better be compelling :) I’m kidding, but not about the drama part — whether with a chandelier, a big piece of wall art or amazing textiles, my dream dining room makes a statement.

piquis reader kati driscoll purchased a victorian home from the 1870s that was in pretty rough shape. her dining room has heavy black soon along the walls and carpeting, holes in the wall and all sorts of pet damage. so she went to town on the space and decided to make things over! my favorite project of hers is the dining room- she ripped up the aging carpets, found beautiful heart pine flooring underneath, and sanded and stained the floors along with help from her dad and brother (her mom did the polyurethane coating!). after the floors were done, kati added wallpaper from ferm living and and a new coat of paint. as it that wasn’t enough, she also decided to open up the fireplace to expose the brick! great work, kati! click here for more pictures

Basic Steps: This project was tricky, in that it involved convincing my husband that painting the space black was not going to make the room feel too dark. I had a mood board of magazine tears taped to the walls for about two months before he was convinced. After that milestone, we ripped up the carpet, had the flooring installed and then painted. We assembled the shelving, applied the wallpaper to the inset ceiling and put up the chandelier. Then came furniture, drapes and finishing touches.
